U16+ SKI TEAM, OPEN SERIES & SELECT FIS RACES

The U16+ team consists of motivated 14 – 18 year old athletes who compete in local and regional USSA events. The U16+ is tailored to offer the most dedicated coaching and attention to our skiers through regular conditioning, on-snow training, technical discussion, and video analysis. Participation in autumn dryland conditioning is expected for U16+ athletes. At the U16 level, the emphasis is on the technical and tactical aspects of racing. Groups split their time between all-mountain skiing, technical drills, gate training, speed event skiing (Super-G). Included in the program cost is a SSEF Team Jacket, 8 Weeks of Pre-Season Dryland Training (Sept-Nov) &  a Holiday Camp.

New participants wishing to enter the Club at the U16 level must first speak with the SSEF Program Director, as significant skiing experience is expected for this group.

Athlete Ages 14 – 18 (2006 – 2009) for seasonal year 2023-24

Program Includes:

  • SSEF Team Jacket stipend of $150
  • Dryland 1x week for 8 weeks Sept – Nov
  • Holiday Camp – tentative Dec 22 & Dec 26-29
  • On-snow training, Sun Valley Pre-Season Camp & Resort Opening – April Snowcup
    • 5/6 Day Team (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday; Thursday will be off day for 5 day athletes)
    • 4 Day Team (2 Weekdays Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, Sat & Sun)
    • 3 Day Team (1 Weekday Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, Sat & Sun)
    • 2 Day Weekend Team  – Weekend Sat & Sun
    • 1 Day Team  – Sat or Sun
    • Training at UOP – Tentatively set for Wednesdays once open to local clubs (additional lane fee & lift ticket expense per athlete)
    • Training at Nordic T, W & Fri (as conditions permit)
  • Coaching at IMD U16Q & Open Series (NOT included: race start fees, lift tickets and coach travel race expenses)
  • NOT included: Coaching at FIS races

Skill Development Focus
Increased focus on competition and racing while continuing to develop a lifelong passion for skiing. Main focus is on developing tactical proficiency in Super G, giant slalom and slalom, while reinforcing all-mountain skiing, hill safety.

A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a team spot and current pricing. Prices will go up by $100 after August 31st and again after September 30th. Full tuition due by Nov 1st.  A 3% processing fee will be automatically charged to all credit card payments or a $2.50 processing fee for all eChecks.

Races
U16 athletes will compete in 15-25 races (race days) per winter.

Within the Intermountain Division, the U16 group will compete in Intermountain U16 Qualifier races.

Athletes have the option to travel with parents or as a team to appropriate races.

The U16 race schedule can be tailored to fit individual athletes. There are other race options including U14 Qualifier and Open Races depending on the needs of the athlete and their USSA race point profile. They typical competition schedule options include:

  • IMD Intermountain Cup
  • IMD Open Series
  • WR Projects by invitation

Additional Expenses & Explanations

Ski Passes & UOP Lanes Fees
Athletes need a Snowbasin, Nordic Valley & UOP season pass. Pass prices are not included in program fees and must be purchased directly through the resorts or venue.

Additional Lane Fees at UOP will be assess per athlete as accrued.

USS&S Membership

Race Expenses (not included in tuition)

  • Race Fees: $20-96/start
  • Lift Tickets for race venues are NOT included
  • Estimated Coach Travel Costs: $200-$800 per race depending on location & staffing
  • Race Expenses will be due NLT 2 weeks prior to the event payable thru ssef.skiclubpro.team
  • WR, Tri-Divisional and IMD Finals race fees are NOT included in tuition & will be determined by what the athlete qualifies to attend

Work Deposit
Refundable with volunteer days or donated to the SSEF Scholarship Fund.

Ski Season Training

  • On Snow: Resort Opening- March
  • Saturday and Sunday at Snowbasin 9:00 – 3:00.
  • Tuesday thru Friday at Snowbasin (1pm-4pm); Nordic Valley (1pm-4pm conditions permitting) & UOP Wednesday time TBD in December
  • Holiday Camp – tentative Dec 23-Dec 30
  • UOP Training (2 hour blocks, Wednesdays, start date & times TBA)
  • Early Loads at Snowbasin, days and times TBD
  • Training is NOT required 5 days a week, but is offered.

U16 athletes are encouraged to compete in 10-20 race days per winter.  Athletes, with the assistance of our SSEF Program Director & Coaching Staff, will have the ability to customize their alpine race experience to their individual skill & desired commitment level.

U16 ~ Racing U14 IMD Series Race Plan is designed for 1-2 day/wk participants &/or those athletes with less than 200+ national points.

U16Q IMD Series, Intermountain Cup Race Plan is designed for 3-4 days/wk participants where additional days on snow help prepare for the elevated competition and conditions of the U16 IMD Series.

U16Q IMD Series & IMD Opens Race Plan is designed for our 5 days/wk full time participants that have had prior success in the U16Q Series and are looking to qualify for Western Regionals

At this age athletes have the choice to travel with the team (as van spots allow) or be accompanied by a parent/guardian in order to travel to races. The choice to travel to races is up to each individual and is not a prerequisite for participation in the program.

Speed events (SG) will be gender split races. Consult your coach for more details to ensure what days each gender will be skiing

All race details will be updated and communicated via TeamSnap.

SSEF Parent/Athlete Handbook

The Snowbasin Sport Education Foundation  is committed to a culture of family participation, team building, social gatherings while supporting our youth through winter sport development.

We will be using TeamSnap for all communications (email/text messaging) & schedule updates.  Once you are registered with SSEF, you will receive a Team Snap invitation.  You will have options on how to set up your notifications to suit you and your family.  Check out TeamSnap How-Tos under our Resources Tab.

There will be many opportunities for parents to be involved with events and competitions. We need help with races, freeride competitions, club fundraisers and individual team activities such as coordination of team tents at races etc.

Our Volunteer Tab will have links to sign up for activities that match your preferences.  Additional volunteer opportunities will be communicated via TeamSnap.
