Snowbasin Ski Team Progression

DEVO Programs

The Snowbasin Ski Team DEVO Program is a comprehensive all mountain curriculum that emphasizes the fundamental skills of skiing.  Most athletes joining the DEVO program have experience skiing with their families or have completed resort ski school programs such as Learn and Earn or resort seasonal programs like Future Busters, Little Busters or Basin Busters.  Athletes must be comfortable skiing terrain off Wildcat Express Chairlift, be able to manage their own equipment both on and off hill and able to load and unload a chairlift independently or ask for assistance.

Athletes can join this program between the ages of 5-15 to gain fundamental skills in a non-competitive team environment.  DEVO athletes are grouped for ability and social compatibility, which range from our beginner to intermediate and advanced levels.  The DEVO program includes two home alpine races and end of season SkillsQuest Assessment in addition to Coach recommendations for follow-on advancement within the Snowbasin Ski Team Progression.

With coach/program recommendation, an athlete may be selected to participate in the DEVO+ program, which includes both on & off piste skiing as well increased exposure to alpine ski racing and freeride skiing in particular.  DEVO+ athletes have the option of adding December Holiday Camp training, higher level alpine races and an at home freeride competition.

All Mountain Rippers (AMR) - NEW for 2024-25

The Snowbasin Ski Team Competitive programs begin with our new All Mountain Rippers Program. This is the introductory phase of our competitive program and has both an alpine and freeride focus, while also continuing to elevate the fundamental skills necessary for whatever competitive path the athlete might choose moving forward.  AMR is intended for athletes with 2-4 years experience in skiing.  It is a one to two year program that allows athletes to acquire enough fundamental skills & experience to determine if their favorite competitive path forward will be Alpine or Freeride.

Alpine Race Programs

The Snowbasin Alpine programs are categorized by series.  From mastering fundamental alpine race techniques to tackling more complex racing skills, our programs are designed to provide a progressive and challenging learning experience while developing a competitive spirit.  The South Series and U14 Qualifier Series are intended to each be two year programs.  A new to racing athlete can find appropriate ability level success in either the south series or U14 qualifier series. Our U16+ Series allows athletes to compete up to the U18 level.

Freeride Competitive Programs

The Snowbasin Freeride Program focuses on the International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association’s (IFSA) five fundamentals of freeride: Line Choice, Control, Technique, Fluidity, and Style and Energy. Intro to Freeride is intended to introduce athletes to these five fundamentals as a stepping stone to the Freeride Competition Team. The Freeride Team develops skills in foundational ski techniques, air awareness, terrain assessment, risk assessment, decision making in regards to ability, decision making in a competition setting, goal setting, and snow safety awareness. You will find our Freeride athletes skiing about 80-90% off piste and 10-20% on piste.

Athletes are expected to have at least an intermediate to advanced all-mountain skiing ability, an excitement for developing their freeskiing abilities and have skied most of the terrain at Snowbasin. Generally athletes are graduates of our Devo, Devo+ or All Mountain Ripper Programs with a coach recommendation for our Freeride Program. Any member or non-member may submit a Freeride Skier Ability Questionnaire to request a discussion about an athlete’s freeride team fit with our Freeride Program Director, Wynter McBride.
